I'll be honest and start by saying that although I own and use various holsters from Ron, I've been very reluctant to get one of his mag carriers. I can’t really put my finger on why. Like most things bought over the internet, I went off the pics, and I just never pulled the trigger. There also weren’t a whole lot of reviews of his mag pouches…actually I couldn’t find any. I’ve carried Comptacs double mag pouch for years (but never one of their holsters…go figure)
But just the other week shopping for yet another holster from GI, I finally decided to try one of their mag pouches. I always carry both spares so I got the double.
I received it today and immediately started doing mag reloads and going through the adjustment process since each mag can be adjusted/angled independently. Each carrier is made from one piece of kydex (including the bottom) and folded over to the two silver screws you see in the pics.
Being 100% honest, although the workmanship is excellent as usual, they aren’t much to look at. In simplest terms it was two square boxes attached to a back plate. I was also concerned that maybe the height of the pouches would be too high compared to what I had been using and used to.
But after just a few hours on the range, I realized that aside from looks this pouch just works. It's simplicity in design. It fits tight to the body and the ability to angle the front mag forward (I keep the rear mag vertical) allows for some flexibility in where you put the carrier on your belt. We’ve all run into the situation where belt loops get in the way of our ideal mag placement on some pants…being able to cant a mag allows for a familiar grip while compensating for belt loop issues.
I also never once ran into any issues with, what I mistakenly thought would be, too high a cut of the pouch for magazine indexing. It’s higher than what I’m used to, but I also didn’t fumble any reloads because of any lack of grip. The higher cut also allows for higher security of your mags. You can adjust those screws so you’ll be pulling all day before they come out (post a YouTube vid if you try)
The entire carrier also rides perfect (kinda hard to tell from the website pics)but it only falls about 1/2-2/3†below the bottom edge of my 1.5†gun belt. For duty or concealed carry it's ride height is perfect.
The bottom line is this design just works. I’ll also say that whatever misconceptions I had about looks, frankly function is the most important regardless. Functionally this mag pouch is perfect. I’ve gone through many in my 20+ yrs as a LEO and it just has the right feel. I'm guessing that to reach the level of design simplicity and function this pouch has had to take lots of trial and error.
There’s also very little to break or fail. If something did happen it is modular enough to only replace the specific part vs. having to get a completely new carrier.
I hope this review helps if you’re on the fence about one of Ron and Sheryl’s products like I was. I can’t imagine you’ll be disappointed. And IMO the most important thing is that you’ll be doing business with two of the most helpful and customer oriented folks in the business. I’ve never met them, probably never will, but having talked to them on the phone about orders and trading emails over the years, they are great people.
My Comptac is going in a box.
Be safe, Rob
